Soaring temperatures, hot sun, and high humidity can cause heat stress in calves and heifers just as in the milking herd. Fresh air is critical to reduce bacterial counts that will cause health issues.
Calves may be better able to cope with warmer temperatures due to their large surface area relative to their body weight and also due to the much smaller amount of heat generated by calves compared to cows. However, calves experiencing heat stress tend to have slower weight gain.
